Mark Calitri speaks tourism: The intersection of life and business

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not.” Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

UNLESS, it’s one word that means a lot to Dr. Seuss. It’s funny how a quote from a children’s book written over 45 years ago applies so much to us today. As we close out 2019 and look to start a new journey into 2020 take a step back from our hectic and over scheduled lives to reflect on what you care about most.
Ask yourself these important questions.
Are you proud of any accomplishments in 2019? What are you going to continue?
What am I doing today to become a better, more valuable person?
Think about your job, family, and friends. What are you going to start caring a “whole awful lot” more about to make things better? Who are you going to care about?
Maybe one person can’t change the world, maybe they can, but the real aspiration should be to become the best YOU that is possible. UNLESS is a powerful word and unless you care, nothing is going to get better. Your UNLESS starts now.

The hotel is estimated to be seven stories and 120 rooms. Ray said just before the Historic Preservation Board meeting he spoke with President of the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau Mark Calitri who asked for a timeline on the new hotel. Calitri said he had been in discussions with the convention center staff about events for 2021 and 2022 but couldn’t place bids for those conventions because of lack of downtown hotel space.
“This opens new windows of opportunity to go after larger conventions that Owensboro has been unable to attract due to lack of downtown hotels,” Calitri said. “The larger the conventions the more room nights push out business to other hotels.”

Mark Calitri speaks tourism: Owensboro, Kentucky, steps up with $15M bluegrass museum and more
Mark Calitri and Dave Kirk work for the Owensboro Daviess County Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is tasked with spreading the news on the exciting transformation of Owensboro.
“Our riverfront is incredible,” Calitri said. “I had a pretty high-profile job in Cincinnati. While there, I could go out to eat and to the store and everything else, and never see somebody I knew. But here in Owensboro, it is different. In the summertime, every Friday we have what is called ‘Friday After Five’ on the riverfront, and it blows your mind how many people come to this free event. And, we just opened a new bourbon distillery, which is now on the official Bourbon Trail, which is visited by over a million people a year here in Kentucky. Our job is to rebrand this city. All roads lead to Owensboro.”

Mark Calitri speaks tourism: Brand USA-Hear the music international marketing campaign features Owensboro Kentucky

On March 15th, Brand USA launched a digital and print Hear the Music campaign with Bloomberg Media Group. This six-month campaign targets Bloomberg’s affluent, travel-ready audience in in eight markets: Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, India, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

The media mix includes print inserts in Bloomberg Businessweek’s Europe and Asia editions; out-stream video; digital homepage takeovers and run of site; and, a digital custom content article featuring the Hear the Music playlist.
All assets link out to the VisitTheUSA.com/Music hub. To align with Bloomberg’s global sites and fluent-English-speaking business audience, all assets are in English.

Mark Calitri said, “This international campaign will produce real value to Owensboro by leveraging the Brand USA’s overall brand awareness and marketing expertise to reach new visitors.”

Mark Calitri speaks tourism: Owensboro Kentucky town on list of top US destinations

Kentucky town on list of top US destinations
OWENSBORO, Ky. – The city will be featured among 10 must-see destinations this year by a company that markets travel to and within the United States.
Brand USA will promote tourism to several major cities and states as part of a campaign that encourages authentic American experiences. Included on the list of 10 are Austin, Texas; Detroit; Miami; Las Vegas; Minnesota; Mississippi; Nashville, Tennessee; New Orleans; Owensboro; and West Hollywood, California.
“We’re hoping to put together a really big campaign behind that this spring,” said Mark Calitri, Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau executive director. “Hopefully the Greater Owensboro Chamber of Commerce and Economic Development Corp. will join us. You just can’t buy that type of national exposure, and we’ll try to capitalize on it.”
Although it may seem Owensboro is a bit out of its league on the list, especially among major economic centers such as Detroit, Las Vegas and New Orleans, Calitri said the region is uniquely positioned in a part of the country Brand USA is targeting right now both culturally and geographically.
No longer are international travel agencies just pointing potential customers toward famous U.S. beaches or centers for meetings, incentives confer-

ences and exhibitions, he said. Rather, tourists are interested in seeing and experiencing the places and people that form a true American identity.
Owensboro – with the world’s only Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum, its burgeoning bourbon economy and rich history in a particular style of European-influenced barbecue – might be just the kind of flavor those new types of international travelers are looking for, he said.
“We’re certainly the outlier on this list,” Calitri said, “but people are looking for something authentic and unique, and I think Owensboro has just that.”
Calitri said the convention and visitors bureau had partnered with the bluegrass museum, O.Z. Tyler Distillery and Moonlite Bar-B-Q Inn to advertise those famous Daviess County institutions at the Evansville Regional Airport near a security checkpoint. By sharing resources, he noted, all the partners were able to keep their costs at a minimum. Daviess County Judge-executive Al Mattingly noted that a third downtown Owensboro hotel, the construction of which has been delayed, according to city leaders by a lack of nearby parking, may add to Owensboro’s popularity as a statewide destination for conventions once it’s built.
“It will change the landscape of the convention business in this commu-nity,” Mattingly said.
Calitri agreed, saying that construction delays have held the community back from even more tourism opportunities.
