Calitri says bigger conventions means higher revenue from hotel tax

The CVB has been pushing for more local tourism, with a focus on bettering Owensboro’s branding, economic development and entertainment venues. Part of bringing more out-of-towners to conventions held at the Owensboro Convention Center is by building more hotels that can hold a higher number of guests.
“We’ve been limited in Owensboro on the size of the conventions we can host,” said CVB President and CEO Mark Calitri. “The convention planners and convention customers will turn us down because they want to stay close to the convention center. The new hotel downtown is going to give us a chance, and we’re already starting to build on business and conventions because of that.”
Calitri and his team have been working to bring bigger conventions to the local area ahead of the finished construction of downtown’s newest hotel.
“We’re starting to put out the feelers. We have to do this two to three year out,” he said. “We can’t start planning when the hotel is finished being built.”

Mark Calitri reports Visit Owensboro-CVB projecting 3.66% increase from room tax-

Visit Owensboro-CVB projecting 3.66% increase from room tax
Last week, the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau approved an $815,480 budget that anticipates a 3.66% increase in revenue from its tax on hotel rooms.
The 2019-2020 fiscal year looks very good, Kyle Aud, board chairman, said after the meeting.
Mark Calitri, CVB president, said the Kentucky Association of Police Chiefs will be here in July, the Kentucky Cattlemen’s Association will return in January and the Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association will be here in April.
The Kentucky Public Procurement Association is slated to meet in Owensboro in October 2020, he said.
Calitri said Kentucky is highlighting 2020 as the “Year of Music.”
That should help bring more people to the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum and other music venues like Friday After 5, he said.
Brand USA, which promotes U.S. tourism in other countries, has named Owensboro one of its Top 10 American music cities and is already promoting it to international travelers.
Chris Joslin, executive director of the Hall of Fame, said earlier that the Hall is planning three or four outdoor bluegrass shows downtown starting in 2020.

Exploring Kentucky | Big Comicon creates substantial economic impact to Owensboro by drawing new visitors, says Mark A. Calitri, Visit Owensboro.

OMG!Con continues to be a very good event for Owensboro and the Owensboro Convention Center, said Mark Calitri.
Calitri pointed to Dave Kirk’s Visit Owensboro Destination Management when he said the conference has a significant economic impact on Owensboro, estimating the OMG!Con will bring $300,000 to the community with a good attendance.
The indirect impact will be even higher, he said, giving the example of an OMG!Con ticket holder going out to eat, and the server from the restaurant spends his tip at another Owensboro business. OMG!Con said in years past the indirect impact is near $1 million.

Brand USA takes Owensboro Kentucky to world stage

Brand USA takes Owensboro Kentucky to world stage
Owensboro tourism moved to the international stage Thursday night with the launching of Brand USA’s “Hear the Music, Experience The USA” campaign locally.
Brand USA, the marketing agency for American tourism, selected Owensboro as one of its Top 10 American music cities last year.
And a short video about Owensboro has already drawn more than 4.1 million views — and 22 million impressions, the number of times the website is opened — worldwide.
That’s more than any other city in the campaign, Tom Garzilli, chief marketing officer for Brand USA, told a crowd gathered at the Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame & Museum.
Mark Calitri, president of the Owensboro-Daviess County Convention & Visitors Bureau, called the promotion “a beautiful opportunity for Owensboro.”
It’s time, he said, for the area to capitalize on its music heritage.
Kristen Branscum, commissioner of the Kentucky Department of Tourism, said Thursday was a time “to celebrate another feather in Owensboro’s cap.”
The community’s bourbon, bluegrass and barbecue promotion is something authentic that tourists — foreign and domestic — are looking for, she said.
Bluegrass music, Branscum said, “is a calling card for Owensboro and the entire state.”
The campaign targets the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, India, France, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico.
The content is available in English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese and Spanish.

Mark Calitri Owensboro Chamber of Commerce

“Our riverfront is incredible,” Calitri said. “I had a pretty high-profile job in Cincinnati. While there, I could go out to eat and to the store and everything else, and never see somebody I knew. But here in Owensboro, it is different. In the summertime, every Friday we have what is called ‘Friday After Five’ on the riverfront, and it blows your mind how many people come to this free event. And, we just opened a new bourbon distillery, which is now on the official Bourbon Trail, which is visited by over a million people a year here in Kentucky. Our job is to rebrand this city. All roads lead to Owensboro.”
