Complaining about the way Sen. Cruz characterizes Mr. Trump’s posturing, Mr. Trump has threatened to sue to block Mr. Cruz’s candidacy, challenging his birthright citizenship. But if Mr. Cruz will recant his accusations about Mr. Trump, Mr. Trump will forswear a legal challenge. How’s that? Mr. Trump says that he will make a principled stand on the most important contest facing America, except that he will back away from his principled stand if Mr. Cruz will shield him from disfavor. And never mind that the courts don’t have a legitimate role in presidential elections, notwithstanding 2000. Ted Cruz is an odious piece of work, but Donald Trump has to be heard to be believed. To hear a presidential candidate announce on nationwide TV he can be had for a song is astonishing. That the two of them get favorable reviews from about half of the more reasonable political party is a really bad omen, especially in a season in which the other party is offering a choice between corruption and 1930s socialism.

The system is broken and I don’t feel so good myself

brokenWe face an election that is critical to our nation and the world, and we concern ourselves with the date when Ted Cruz’s mother moved to Canada, Marco Rubio’s wife’s traffic tickets and Chelsea Clinton’s expensive vacation. We have reduced the nomination process to a series of TV game shows. Is it any wonder that an inane buffoon, now endorsed by the most frivolous woman in politics, is leading the Republican polls, which themselves are a distraction? And no Democrat is challenging the deeply flawed presumptive candidate except a grizzled old socialist from the Green Mountains and the former governor who lost Maryland for his party. Our nominating system is broken. How about a convention that actually makes the choice?

If we must choose a nominee by “reality” game show, I want to return to the “Survivor” format and have the candidates eat live bugs and wade through a swamp, after which they get to vote each other off the island. That system would reflect the realities of governing better than what we are doing.

Warning: Crazy people are coming!

crazy people

Mr. Norman Conquest provides thought provoking political insight with a seriously sarcastic twist.

The New Hampshire results indicate that more than one-third of the Republicans and three-fifths of the Democrats are crazy. Of course, the Democrats had only two choices: crazy or corrupt. The Republicans have less excuse.

Hillary Clinton gave up her self-respect and her sense of shame as a necessity. Being Bill Clinton’s wife led her there, and she chose success over integrity. The problem for the Democratic Party today is that its members are giving up their sense of shame, similarly choosing success over integrity, because they still think she can win and don’t see an easier path. Win or lose, they’ll pay a price in the damage they are doing their party.

Republican rednecks and Sarah Palin

Republican rednecks: Today on radio I heard Sarah Palin talk about her son being arrested for beating up his girlfriend, but blaming PTSD and President Obama for the young man’s situation, which is preposterous. It’s too bad the Palin family raised their children to such misadventure, but can we not take responsibility for our own actions, without having to blame someone — and without pretending our problems at home belong to the president of the United States? Such moral shirking shames veterans from the Revolution through today. The White Trash Wing of the Republican Party is on bold display this week.

“Sarah Palin endorses Donald Trump’s presidential bid”
—headline, The Washington Post

I have been among the many Republicans who have wondered whether Sarah Palin was a victim of partisan abuse, or just a chucklehead who deserved the derision. We no longer need to wonder.
