Leading Through Action: How Owensboro Burger Week Became a Leadership Playbook
By Mark Calitri
Strong leadership doesn’t start with hype. It starts with action.
Owensboro Burger Week is proof of what happens when leadership meets execution. What began in 2021 as a response to restaurants struggling through pandemic shutdowns has grown into one of Owensboro’s most anticipated annual events — and a reliable driver of economic activity.
Burger Week returns March 5–14 for its sixth year, and the results speak for themselves.
Leadership That Creates Opportunity
Owensboro Burger Week was created by Visit Owensboro and the City of Owensboro with a clear purpose: support local restaurants, drive traffic, and inject momentum when it mattered most.
That clarity made the difference.
Last year, 49 Daviess County restaurants sold 63,105 burgers in just nine days. That equals 15,776 pounds of beef — roughly the weight of five Toyota Camrys or one full-size elephant.
The year before, 40 restaurants sold 57,316 burgers. In the first year alone, 24 restaurants sold 11,606 burgers, and participating locations saw an average 245% increase in burger sales during the week.
That growth didn’t happen by chance. It happened because leaders created a framework that worked.
Simple Rules. Real Results.
Burger Week succeeds because it avoids overthinking.
Restaurants choose the burger.
They control the size and ingredients.
The price stays accessible.
That approach removes friction, encourages creativity, and drives repeat visits. It also turns a single promotion into a full dining experience that extends well beyond the featured burger.
In 2023, featured burger sales alone generated $504,840 in nine days. That figure doesn’t include drinks, sides, desserts, or return visits — all of which amplify the total economic impact.
Clear rules. Shared ownership. Strong execution.
That’s leadership.
Momentum Is Built, Not Marketed
Burger Week now attracts visitors from outside Daviess County and motivates locals to explore restaurants they may not normally visit. More importantly, it shows what sustained leadership looks like when a community commits to something that works.
This event didn’t grow because of slogans.
It grew because of consistency.
It grew because leaders stayed focused on outcomes.
Owensboro Burger Week is a reminder that when leadership is practical, collaborative, and disciplined, excitement follows.
The Leadership Takeaway
The best leaders respond when others hesitate. They build opportunities, support their people, and stay committed long enough to see momentum take hold.
Owensboro Burger Week stands as a simple but powerful example of leadership done right — steady, focused, and built to last.
