Mark Calitri: Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit Powers Owensboro Tourism

Why the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit Matters to Owensboro

If you've lived in Owensboro for any length of time, you've seen our community evolve. We're no longer known for just one or two signature events. Today, we're becoming a destination where families, athletes, meeting planners, and visitors know they'll find something happening year-round.

The inaugural Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit is another great example of that momentum.

Over two weekends, more than 4,300 athletes and their families are expected to visit Owensboro to compete in 11 different sporting events. That's thousands of people staying in our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping in our stores, and discovering our riverfront, attractions, and hospitality.

As President and CEO of Visit Owensboro, I've believed for several years that we could think bigger about sports tourism. Instead of promoting one tournament at a time, why not bring multiple events together under one community-wide brand? That vision became the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit.

Turning that vision into reality took a tremendous team effort. Our Sports Sales Director, Lucas Daunhauer, worked alongside event organizers, facility managers, and community partners for months to coordinate this first-ever event. The City of Owensboro, Daviess County, Owensboro Parks & Recreation, Daviess County Parks & Recreation, Oak View Group, local sports organizations, and many others all played an important role.

That's one of Owensboro's greatest strengths. We work together.

Sports tourism is about much more than games and championships. Every visitor who comes to Owensboro creates an opportunity for our local businesses. Hotel rooms are filled. Restaurants are busy. Retail stores welcome new customers. Families explore our parks, museums, riverfront, and entertainment venues. Those visitors help support local jobs and strengthen our economy.

The Bluegrass Clash also gives us a glimpse of what's ahead. With the Bluegrass Fieldhouse opening and the new Ben Hawes Pickleball Complex expanding our ability to host larger competitions, Owensboro is positioned to attract even more regional and national sporting events in the years ahead.

That doesn't happen overnight. It happens because community partners share a common goal and continue investing in facilities, relationships, and opportunities that make Owensboro competitive.

I'm proud of what our community has accomplished, and I'm even more excited about what's next.

If you're looking for something to do over the next two weekends, I encourage you to get out and experience the Bluegrass Clash Sports Summit. Cheer on the athletes, support our local businesses, and enjoy everything happening across Owensboro.
