Mark Calitri: The Real Reason Special Olympics Kentucky Keeps Coming Back to Owensboro

As President & CEO of Visit Owensboro, I've learned that every destination can build a sports complex.

Not every destination builds a reputation.

That's the difference.

When I read that Special Olympics Kentucky is returning to Owensboro for the third consecutive year, I wasn't excited simply because another championship is coming to town. I was excited because it confirms something we've worked hard to build over many years.

People enjoy coming here.

Kim Johnson recently described Owensboro's hospitality as "top-notch." She praised our parks, hotels, restaurants and the people who welcome athletes and families every year. She also shared something that should make every resident proud. She said bringing the tournament back has been an easy decision because there have been virtually no complaints. In today's world, that's one of the greatest compliments a community can receive.

We often measure sports tourism by hotel occupancy, restaurant sales and visitor spending. Those numbers matter because they support local jobs, businesses and quality of life.

But those numbers aren't why events return.

Events return because visitors feel welcome.

This September, hundreds of athletes, coaches and families will once again experience Owensboro. They'll compete at Jack C. Fisher Park. They'll dine in our restaurants, stay in our hotels and meet volunteers who genuinely care about making their weekend special.

We're also taking another step forward by moving the Saturday night celebration to the Owensboro Sportscenter. With the video boards, lights and sound system, these athletes will enjoy a championship atmosphere that matches the incredible effort they've put into reaching the state tournament.

I've always believed the best marketing isn't what you say about yourself.

It's what others say after they leave.

Special Olympics Kentucky keeps choosing Owensboro because our community delivers. Outstanding facilities may attract an event, but outstanding people are what bring it back year after year.

That's why Owensboro continues attracting state championships, national tournaments and visitors from across the country. We don't simply host events. We create experiences people remember.

The future of tourism in Owensboro has never been brighter because our greatest attraction has never been a building.

It's our people.
