What Pete Rose and Babe Ruth Teach Us About Leadership, Success, and Taking Risks

Pete Rose and Babe Ruth became baseball legends, but they couldn't have taken more different paths to greatness.

Pete Rose became Major League Baseball's all-time hits leader by doing the little things well. He wasn't trying to hit a home run every time he stepped to the plate. He focused on getting the next hit. One single became another. Small daily wins eventually became 4,256 career hits, a record that still stands today.

Babe Ruth had a completely different approach.

He changed baseball by swinging for the fences. He retired as the all-time home run leader, but he also retired as baseball's all-time strikeout leader. Most people remember the home runs. Few remember the strikeouts that came with them.

That's where the leadership lesson begins.

Too often, people believe success only comes one way. It doesn't.

Some goals are accomplished by showing up every day, staying disciplined, and stacking one small victory after another. That's the Pete Rose approach. Progress compounds over time.

Other opportunities demand something different. Sometimes you have to take the big swing. You have to accept uncertainty, knowing you might fail. That's the Babe Ruth approach. Without the willingness to strike out, there are no home runs.

Great leaders understand both.

They know when their team needs consistency, discipline, and steady progress. They also recognize the moments that require bold decisions and calculated risks.

The mistake isn't choosing one philosophy over the other.

The mistake is using the wrong approach at the wrong time.

Leadership isn't about always playing it safe, and it isn't about always swinging for the fences. It's about having the wisdom to know what the moment requires.

Some days your job is to collect another single.

Some days it's time to swing for the fence.

The best leaders know the difference.
